Speaker Bio
Natasha “Tash” Swan - Journeyman Carpenter (Edmonton, AB)

Natasha is an indigenous woman with roots from Paul First Nation and Bigstone Cree Nation. Her family initially lived in Paul First Nation but they moved to Edmonton in 2003. Currently, Natasha resides in south Edmonton with her husband and their three-year-old daughter.

Natasha stumbled into the trades as a commercial labourer around seven years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Entranced by the fast-paced environment, ever changing priorities, and hands-on approach, Natasha immediately fell in love with construction. Along the way, there were ups and downs, small victories, devastating blows, and ample caffeine.

At the encouragement of a fellow worker, Natasha applied for a carpentry apprenticeship and thus became indentured. Trade school at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology was a psychological and financial struggle but was certainly a worthwhile endeavour.

Natasha started with Chandos Construction as a third-year apprentice in 2018. She has gained a lot of practical knowledge and skills on site and has found many mentors and friendships.

As Chandos focuses on an inclusive and safety-based culture, Natasha has been in all of her glory. Capitalizing on previous administrative experience and attention to detail, Natasha enjoys taking the reins of the safety program on site.

As a double minority, Natasha recognizes that there are unique challenges at work and addresses concerns as they come up. With support from the team, Natasha has found an environment in which to thrive.

Natasha is now an accredited carpenter, safety facilitator, mother, wife, mentor, advocate, and an after-hours gardener. Despite encountering more than her fair share of obstacles, Natasha has endured and clawed her way to success. In hopes of inspiring others and increasing awareness, Natasha is sharing her journey in construction as a carpenter.
